JD Unterborg is the first Germantown High School student in more than a decade to be selected to participate in the NYSSMA All-State performance, which takes place from Dec. 5-8 at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester.
“JD is our first student selected for All-State in at least the past 12 years that I’ve been here,” Band teacher Mr. Galliher said. “He has done a great job and Miss Raftery (GCS Music teacher) has been working very hard on the clarinet with JD as well.”
Unterborg began playing the clarinet in fourth grade, starting off with the B Flat Clarinet and graduating to the Bass Clarinet in sixth grade. He will be playing the Bass Clarinet with the Symphonic Band at All-State.
To get to All-State, Unterborg had to perform a solo at the highest level, level 6, and score in the upper 90s or 100 in order to be considered.
“It was pretty nice to know that I finally made it,” said the senior.
In previous years, Unterborg performed in area events, just a level below All-State.
Unterborg will join other musicians in Rochester on Thursday, Dec. 5, and will rehearse for three days with guest conductors. There will also be auditions to see which seat each musician is placed in.
“I’ve been practicing every day at home,” Unterborg said. “I’m pretty excited about it, plus I get to spend a few days in a different area away from home.”
After graduating from GCS, Unterborg hopes to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology. While he doesn’t plan on making music a career path, he does hope to continue to play past high school.
