Susan L.S. Brown
Mrs. Brown was the elementary principal of Germantown Central School from March 2005 until August 2013. Previously she was an assistant principal at Hudson Middle School and an elementary computer teacher in the Hudson City School District.
Mrs. Brown earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education with a Specialization in Mathematics from SUNY Oneonta. From SUNY New Paltz, she received a M.S. in Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) in Educational Administration and Supervision. SUNY New Paltz named her the Outstanding Graduate of the Administrative CAS program in 2003.
As an active member of the Germantown community since 1983, she served for six years as a Cub Scout leader, five years as a Girl Scout leader, and one year on the advisory board for the Hudson Salvation Army.
In 2005 Mrs. Brown was inducted into the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators, Alpha Nu Chapter. She was named 2010 Teacher of the Year by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) and 2012 Co-Principal of the Year by the Greater Capital Region Principals’ Center.
In March 2005, Mrs. Brown joined the team of exceptional educators at Germantown to continue the elementary educational philosophy, K-2 Learn to Read ~ 3-6 Read to Learn. Together she and her teachers used data from multiple measures of student achievement to implementindividualized Academic Intervention Services (AIS) and monitored each child’s progress with the goal that all students be successful.
During her tenure as Principal, Mrs. Brown developed and implemented an after-school program, established new safety plans, chaired the District’s Technology Committee, implemented an Exceptional Student program, was a board member of the Germantown Student Education Foundation (GSEF), sat on the Education 2015 Committee, and was an integral member of the District Leadership Team.
Mrs. Brown believes that the Germantown Central School District, with grades K-12 in a single building, provides the most effective environment for students to learn and thrive. Through collaborative processes that involve all stakeholders in the school community, Mrs. Brown intends to lead the Germantown Central School District to continually improve the instructional program, extend educational opportunities, explore new relationships with local business and neighboring colleges, and ensure that students are college and career ready by graduation.
